The Weeknd

Check out this man's work. He just finished dropping "Echoes of Silence" the third installment thus completing the trilogy. He's managed to drop 3 quality mixtapes in a 9 month span this year. He is quickly building a buzz and 2012 should be his year. He's managed to do this without Drake even though the affiliation only helped him gain exposure. I've never heard R&B from this perspective. He's bringing something new to the game and it's quite refreshing. I hope The Weeknd and Drake don't become one in the same. I appreciate that they bring different perspectives of the life of a young man. Drake's introspective, self-effacing lyric reveal the inner machinations of many dudes in their early to mid-twenties: the quest to live life to the limit, not just survive a nine-to-five; the balance of carnal desires with sincere compassion for women’s feelings; the struggle to act responsible when all you want to do is blow your paycheck on lap dances, liquor, and weed. The Weeknd is similar except there is a lack of compassion for women's feelings. He doesn't simp hoes on records. He makes anti-love R&B. He makes music for fucking, music for riding, and music while you're alone to just appreciate it for what it is.
